That evening, Cristos leaned against one of the Parisian-style streetlamps that decorated the French Quarter. Women of all shapes and sizes traipsed by, all in their own little worlds. If only he could be as carefree…

Fifty feet away, Braden watched with an unsympathetic glare. At least the guy had relented and allowed some semblance of space. First he ordered Cristos to attack Ella, and then he wanted front-row seats for the event? No.

Cristos observed the general area. Based on Ella’s social media posts, she was in one of these T-shirt tourist shops. Damn kid. Why hadn’t Brooke or Alex taught her to use safety measures? Teens should never give out their locations. He sighed. The young. They think they’re invincible.

Time seemed to slow here on the Quarter streets, and a half-moon cast its light on the narrow pathways that seemed abundant in this city surrounded by water.

Cristos looked back toward Braden, who’d become distracted by several ladies of the evening. Good. Cristos knew he couldn’t bring himself to rape anyone—let alone Ella—but he could set a scene where Braden would accept the result. It would keep Cristos out of Hell. He hoped.

Random sinners wandered about. Some were drunk off their asses, and others groped women. They wouldn’t do. Cristos needed to reap someone weaker, a sinner who could start to attack Ella but wasn’t strong enough to finish the deed before she screamed and ran away.

After scanning the crowd for several minutes, one man in his late fifties approached. He appeared to have trouble walking. Good. That would slow him down, let Ella escape, but was this human guilty of one of the Seven Deadly Sins? Cristos stepped closer. He couldn’t reap a soul just for jaywalking. Come on. Give me some clue. Make this work so Ella remains safe.

Aha! Stuffed in the man’s coat were a bunch of magazines. Porno. Perfect. The sin of lust and greed. Cristos approached him, tapped him on the shoulder.

“You’re mine.”

The man’s eyes grew bleak. “What will you have me do?”

“In a few minutes, a young girl will walk out of these shops. You will attack her.”

The man, who looked more like a homeless grandfather than a rapist, looked up at Cristos with obedient eyes. “Attack? Please clarify.”

“R…rape.” Cristos swallowed hard, pushing the bile back down his throat at saying the very word. But he couldn’t go back to Hell. Reaping this man was the only way. Braden would be satisfied with his effort, and Ella could easily run from someone so weak.

“Yes, Master,” the man said. “Tell me who.”

Cristos looked back at Braden, who was now distracted in a hooker’s embrace. Good. “Come on. Around this corner, out of sight of my colleague.”

“Yes, Master.”

A moment later Ella left the tourist shop with a big smile on her face.

“H…her.” Cristos pointed, then ducked out of sight.

“Your wish is my command.” The man prodded over and stopped Ella in her tracks.

“Oh. Hello. Excuse me,” Ella said, and she went to step around him.

“Not so fast, girlie.
